Wendy Nixson recently presented alongside Dr Peter Reid, Anaesthetist, at the Australian Lawyers Alliance Medical Law Conference 2026, held in Melbourne. They discussed the cost of error following unintentional awareness during general anaesthesia. Whilst it is relatively uncommon, since 75% of cases are judged to be preventable, they focused on the patient and clinical risk factors which can lead to such a phenomenon, how it is detected both intraoperatively and post-operatively once it occurs and what impacts it can have on the patient.
Sarah Vallance also chaired the morning session of Day 2 – with insightful presentations on the delayed diagnosis and treatment of spinal conditions, and also the challenges of contemporary maternity care.
As always, it was a truly valuable day packed full of learning, sharing and (re)connecting with colleagues.
